Tiny, smaller than Planfait!
Rocks at the foot and bushes and then a sheer drop below! Madness.
Forecast in the Montalegre area had been for strong winds to task there, and the thought was that we would not be able to gain height to benefit from the thermals above the inversion.
Chaves did not bring us any joy. A small take off, far too small to launch 120 gliders to take off, and as the task was set, the wind kicked in. Two wind-dummies lobbed off; an Advance and an Enzo. The Enzo managed to climb out and the Advance milled in scrappy wind blown valley thermals until out of sight. The task was postponed for one hr later, then re-set. More wind, and postponed again for a further hour. Window open and a few pilots took off. Gusts on take off and window closed. Minutes later for the Meet Director to announce that the task was cancelled. Mopping up the pilots on the way back to Montalegre, we enjoyed a beer stop-off and an ice cream the other side of Chaves. Grateful to be back at HQ and time to organise a couple of hours of free time before dinner, some set off to the pool. The french are organising a BBQ by the river, to which I am cordially invited to gatecrash! More tomorrow..hopefully with no hangover!
